On August 27, 2012, Rockwell T. Gust, Jr., 88, died and was called home to be with the Lord. He was a long term resident in his home state of Michigan and moved to Naples, FL, his adopted state for the past 30 years.

Mr. Gust was father of five children (with Anne Baldwin Gust), and stepfather of two (with Joan Walsh Gust). Altogether he was the doting grandfather to a blended family of 19 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, fellow Michigander Joan Walsh Gust, now of Naples; daughter, Ruth Gust Tyler, of Kalamazoo, MI and her two children, Robert and Julie; son, Rockwell Gust III (Julie) of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and their children, Rockwell IV, Mack, and Tyler; son, Robert Gust of Manila, Philippines, and his three children, Bennett, Garrett, and Abby; daughter, Anne Gust Brown (Jerry) of Oakland, CA; son, Bill Gust (Karen) of Hinsdale, IL and their children, Jennifer, Allison, and David. Also mourning Mr. Gust's passing are his stepchildren, Thomas Walsh (Kimberley) of Naples, FL, and their five children, Thomas, Elizabeth, Suzanne, Amanda, and Chris, and Cathie Fosth and her two sons, Alex and Andrew of Woodbridge, VA.

Mr. Gust was preceded in death by his two sisters, Jean and Betty; and his grandson, Timmy.

In 1942, leaving Michigan as a graduate of Detroit Country Day School, he headed for Williamstown, MA to attend Williams College. His years at Williams College were interrupted for a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant aboard a PT Boat. He completed his education at Williams College in 1946 and moved back to Michigan, where he earned his LLD at the University of Michigan Law School by 1949.

In addition to practicing law in Detroit, Mr. Gust developed an interest in politics. Joining the GOP, he was nominated to run as lieutenant governor alongside of George Romney who was running for governor. Mr. Gust was later elected to Michigan's Constitutional Congress. He never lost his interest in politics.

After the Gusts moved to Naples, FL, Mr. Gust quickly realized that the sleepy fishing village was on the brink of explosive growth of incoming retiring baby boomers. Such an influx of retiring residents would require a parallel growth in the need for affordable housing. He put together a number of partnerships to acquire land and build such affordable housing, even though he had to fight for the privilege to make these improvements all the way to Florida's Supreme Court.

Following his abiding faith in God, he served his church and his God faithfully. He spent many long hard hours as an Elder, first at the Kirk in the Hills, Bloomfield Hills, MI, and then at First Presbyterian Church of Naples.

He will be missed by many. He was a giant of a man and will remain so in cherished memories.

Services on Friday, August 31, 2012 (TOMORROW) at 4:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Naples, 250 Sixth Street South, Naples, FL 34102.
