Born in Providence to George and Christine M. (Wheaton) Richards.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean War at the rank of Sergeant with A Battery 514th Antiaircraft Battalion out of Fort Banks, Mass.
He worked as a maintenance mechanic for the City of Providence Public Works Department and for the Providence Housing Authority for many years before retiring in 1989. Bob was a past president of Providence Housing Authority, Local 1217.
He enjoyed singing, dancing and time at the beach. He loved his wife and his family, Red Sox, and the Patriots. He and Betty were winter residents of Naples, FL for the past 30 of years. Bob will be remembered as a man who was loved by all.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children: Robert C. Richards (wife Lynn), Joann Fenton (husband Garry), Alicia Murphy (husband Joseph), Thomas H. Richards, P.P.D. (wife Gina), and Jeffrey Richards, Det. P.P.D. (wife Regina); two sisters: Rita Kelly and Ann Marie Passarelli, and thirteen grandchildren: Robert C. Richards III (wife Jennifer), Jenifer Pray (husband Michael), Peter Richards (wife Jessica), Andrew Richards, Michael Fenton (wife Eileen), Ashley Fenton (fiancé Eric), Natalia Richards, Amber Richards, Kristen Murphy, Jessica Murphy, Thomas H. Richards Jr., Det. P.P.D. (wife Shawna), Kyle J. Richards, Det. P.P.D. (wife Lauren), and Melissa Laprey (husband James).
He was the proud Grandpa and Papa of seventeen great grandchildren: Evelyn, William, Nicholas, Ashton, Jacquelyn, Cariana, Braxton, Bentley, Alexia, Braelyn, Liam, Orion, Theo, Layla, Tommy, Lucas, and Patrick. He was the brother of the late George, Vincent, Louis, Roland, Ethel, and Mildred.
Calling hours were held at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick on Monday evening, January 17. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at SS. John & Paul Church, 341 South Main Street, Coventry on Tuesday, January 18. Inurnment with military honors was in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
