7th of 16 children (born 1838-1861) of Charles Dixon & Mary Kirton, who married at Worksop, Nottingham in 1838 and, along with children Sarah aged 3 & David aged 8 months (young son John Dixon had died in Nottinghamshire May 1840), they embarked on the 'London' at Gravesend 2 Jan 1842, arriving in Wellington on 1 May 1842. (Charles's brother Joseph Dixon and his family were on the same voyage).

The family first settled in Karori where they had a dairy farm.
* In 1855 the they moved to Masterton, with 13 year old son David being sent ahead to drive the cattle over the Rimutaka hills (a journey taking 2 weeks). The family arrived shortly after David. On arrival in Masterton they were faced with starvation, but some local Maori provided their needs. Father Charles Dixon then erected a slab whare on their remote property which they named Worksop Farm.
