Frank R. Staples, 70, of 3 Massasoit Ave., a veteran of the 1945 airborne liberation of Corregidor, died at home Friday.
He was an accountant for many years at United Elastic Co. in Easthampton, and worked later for Gazette Printing Co. He retired in 1979.
A lifelong resident, he attended the former Northampton Commercial College.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, which distinguished itself in the Philippine liberation campaign early in 1945. The regiment jumped on to the tiny island fortress of Corregidor in February 1945 in one of the most successful airborne operations of the war.
Staples received a Philippine Liberation Medal, the Purple Heart, and an Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon with bronze star and arrowhead.
He was a former member of the Elks Club, and was active in the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment Reunion Committee.
His wife, the former Elizabeth Coffey, died in 1992.
The decedent leaves a son; three daughters; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday morning at Czelusniak Funeral Home, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
