Jacob Emal Edwards II, 74, went home to be with his Lord Sunday, October 28, 2018, at Hillview Nursing Home following an extended illness.
He was born in Johnson City, TN, December 12, 1943, son of Jacob Emal Edwards and Ida Lee Hammons Edwards. He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob Emal Edwards and his mother, Ida Lee Hammons Edwards. He is survived by a cousin, Elaine Maham, of Port Deposit, Maryland, an aunt, Jewel Booher, of Elkton, Maryland, and several cousins in Mountain City, TN, in North Carolina, Idaho, and Maryland.
Jacob graduated from East Tennessee State Training School (now University High) in 1962, after attending Elizabethton public schools through grade nine. He was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force after serving from 1966 to 1970, during the Viet Nam conflict. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1971, and a Master of Arts in Sociology in 1986, both from East Tennessee State University.
Jacob was an accomplished photographer, spending from 1986 to 2000 in that field. He spent those years in Fort Polk, LA, Knoxville, TN, and in Johnson City, managing photo labs and owning a photography business. While in Knoxville, he was a photography instructor at the University of Tennessee.
He became an adjunct professor at Northeast State Technical Community College in 2000, and continued teaching there for many years. He also taught online courses at Pellissippi State Community College, Knoxville, until his illness made it impossible during the spring semester of this year.
Jacob donated his body to Restore Life USA, a non-profit organization that specializes in tissue research to find cures for all forms of cancer and countless other medical conditions.
He was a faithful member of Memorial Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton, where a memorial service for him will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. The church is located at 100 East F Street, Elizabethton, TN, 37643. There will be a reception immediately following the service.
