July 6, 1924 ~ January 13, 2022

Evelyn (Williams) Andersen, 97, of Dakota City, NE passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at her residence.

A visitation with family present will be Sunday, January 16, 2022 from 4:00-5:00 P.M. and a Prayer Service at 5:00 P.M. at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Friday, January 28, 2022 at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel in the Fort Snelling State Park followed by the burial at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Evelyn Williams Andersen was born on July 6th, 1924, in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, the daughter of Earl and Hazel (York) Williams. She had three brothers and two sisters, and an infant brother who died in childbirth along with her mother. Because of the Great Depression, her father worked away from home much of the time so the children were placed in orphanages in Omaha, with Evelyn and her sister, Lois, going to the Minerva Cottage Girl's home in Omaha. Evelyn was close to her friends at the home, especially Mandy, Doris, Ruth and Margie. Evelyn attended Omaha-Benson High School. She married Marvin M. Andersen on February 8th, 1941. To this union, five children were born, referred to as the 5 Jays: Judy, Johnny, Jimmy, Joan and Joyce. In the early years of their marriage, Marvin and Evelyn lived in Omaha, Nebraska and Carter Lake, Iowa. Marvin's military service brought them to Army posts in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Washington, Germany, and South Dakota.

Evelyn was known for her creativity, artistry, and culinary skills, and was the perfect officer's wife, well versed in the etiquettes and protocols of military life, and in entertaining. There were many times when Marvin was called away for duty that Evelyn raised the 5 Jay's by herself, sometimes for an entire year's length. She loved flowers and was skilled at flower arranging. Upon Marvin's retirement from the Army, she acquired the Carousel Flower shop in South Sioux City, NE, retiring in 1992. She was an excellent seamstress, devoting much time to sewing and crocheting. She delighted in decorating the house elaborately for Christmas and never failed to make a Hansel and Gretel gingerbread house every year. Her greatest joy, however, was her devotion to her husband for over 78 years. Their abiding love for each other was an inspiration to the entire family.

Left to cherish her memory are the 5 Jay's: Judith (Ronald) Box, Lebanon, TN, Marvin John (Cheryl), South Sioux City, NE, James (Kim), Mizpah, MN, Joan (John) Fickler, Dakota City, NE, and Joyce (Wayne) Deilke, Woodbury, MN, her brothers Donald and Gary, 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marvin, her parents Earl and Hazel, brothers Douglas and Earl, sisters Lois and Patricia, and great grandson, Brant.

Pallbearers will be great-grandsons Beau Andersen, Zachary Andersen, Graham Brownlee, Samuel Deilke, Tyler Gilbery, Cameron Lyman, Jackson Lyman, Easton Schultz and Rylan Schultz.

In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made in her name to the Dakota City United Methodist Church.
