Augusta, GA – Bonnie Goldston Carr died Sunday, January 9, 2022, at her home in Augusta, Georgia after a lengthy illness. A longtime resident of Spartanburg, she was the wife of Richard (Dick) W. Carr, Jr.
Born November 12, 1940, in Rocky Mount, NC, she was the daughter of the late Rev. C. Wade Goldston and Ruth Melton Goldston. Her father served a number of Methodist churches in Eastern North Carolina; therefore, Bonnie considered her Aunt Belle Bryan's family farm in Battleboro, NC as her home.
Bonnie was a graduate of Salem Academy in Winston-Salem, NC where she met her future husband, Dick, while on vacation in South Carolina. She attended Converse College and they were later married. After Dick's graduation from Presbyterian College and service in the US Army, they made their home in Spartanburg where Bonnie was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Additionally, she was a founding member of the Margaret Moore Garden Club and a community volunteer with the Junior League of Spartanburg.
Upon her family's relocation to Augusta, GA, Bonnie continued her community service with the Junior League. Later, she accepted the position as director of the YWCA in Augusta where she began her professional career in non-profit community service and leadership. In Augusta, she was also an active member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Eventually, Bonnie and her family returned to Spartanburg where she served at First Presbyterian Church as a Bible Study leader, Deacon and Elder. She continued her professional work when she joined the staff of the United Way of the Piedmont. She retired as Executive Vice-President and CFO in 2005 after 20 years of service. Her talents for organization and leadership were respected by all, and she was passionate about encouraging women to become active participants and leaders in their community.
In addition to her work life, Bonnie's hobbies included playing tennis and following Tar Heel basketball and Clemson football. She and Dick enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their retirement. Girl trips with her daughters were also a special highlight. Her friends and family always appreciated her love and spirt of generosity.
Bonnie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dick, her children Margaret Hall (George, deceased), Ann Bryan Josey (Jordan), Richard W. Carr III (Shay), eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her brother, Joe Goldston (Linda, deceased) also survives.
A memorial service for Bonnie will be held at a later date at First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg with internment in the church Columbarium.
