"The life of Mrs. Harlan VanValkenburg, mother of nine children, five boys and four girls, was snuffed out on Tuesday afternoon when the family home in Monticello street at Richfield Springs was burned to the ground. The blaze was caused by an explosion in the kitchen stove, which occurred at about 3 o'clock. Mrs. VanValkenburg was washing dishes and was enveloped in the flames. Attempts to rescue her failed on account of the terrible heat. When the body was recovered it was evident that one arm had been blown off by the explosion. The house was owned by August Potrikus and is a complete loss. Besides the children mentioned Mrs. VanValkenburg is survived by her husband. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crossway. All the members of the family have the sincere sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.---Our Richfield Springs Reporter."
