He married Permelia Browning on January 2, 1845 in Alabama or Mississippi. Permelia was born on September 29, 1830 in Illinois. Zack and Permelia came to Texas some time in the early 1850s. Zack and Permelia had nine children, three born in Mississippi and six born in Texas: Andrew Jackson, Nancy Elizabeth, Rufus Runnels, John B., Mary Ann, Zack Cole, Permelia Jane, Isaac Newton, and James Tilford.
