DEATHS
At New Orleans, La, on Friday, 30th January, James Steele, son of Mr John Steele, Ramsay, aged 27 years.
1885, Friday February 6, The Almonte Gazette page 3
Sad News -- A respected family in Ramsay -- that of Mr John Steele -- has just been thrown into mourning by a telegram conveying the information that James, second son of Mr Steele, died last week at New Orleans. Learning that James was lying ill at that place, his brother John left last Thursday, (29th ult.) to see that he was being properly cared for, but ere he reached him the vital spark had fled. We have not heard the cause of death, further than it was by a fever. The deceased young man was well known in this town and in Ramsay, and was greatly esteemed by his friends. He received his education at our High School, and for a time taught school at Lyn and Kinburn. Leaving the profession, he went to Manitoba, and engaged in farming for a time. Last year he went to the States, and was in New Orleans when he contracted the illness that resulted in his death last Friday. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of their large circle of friends.

Once More -- The body of the deceased son of Mr John Steele, of Ramsay -- whose death we recorded last week -- was brought to Carleton Place on Sunday morning last, and from thence was removed to his late home. Every precaution had been taken to prevent any serious consequences by the removal of the body, and these had so added to the weight that the strength of ten men was required to lift it, and the hearse could not be used. The funeral was a very large one, and testified to the respect felt for the deceased and sympathy for the family.
