James Leland (Jim) Hancock, 77, of Madison, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 17, 2021 at his home.

Jim was born on May 25, 1944 in Spencer, Iowa the son of Leo and Cleo Malm Hancock. He graduated from Clarence High School in 1962. Jim married Marian Gibler on October 20, 1967 in Moberly and she survives at home. They were married 54 years. Other survivors include five children, Frank (Karen) Hancock, Joy Sexton, Janey (Charlie) Youse, Jody Bishop and Logan Hancock; fourteen grandchildren, Brittany and Derek Vanlandingham (Addison and Lillian), Bridget Hancock, Breanna Hancock, Kayla and Michael Doerhoff (Raegan, Evelynn and Charlise), Kelsey Sexton, Jacob and Payton Youse (Jacey), Joshua Youse, Dylan Bishop, Jessica Stoebe, Jenna and Ricky Barajas (Lucia), Eric Hancock (Charles), James Hancock, Alissa Hancock and Alexis Hancock; eight Great-grandchildren; four brothers, Terry (Bernie) Hancock, Bob (Joann) Hancock, Don (Patricia) Hancock and Bill (Jodi) Hancock; one sister, Vickie (Trot) Gallop and one sister-in-law, Marilyn Hancock. He was preceded in death by one brother, Verlyn Hancock.

Jim was formerly employed by Norfolk and Southern Railroad from 1969 until 1996, when he retired after 27 years. He thoroughly enjoyed working outside. Jim had several hobbies which included coon hunting, his sawmill, cutting wood, collecting tractors, and going to the junkyard to collect his special treasures.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim also enjoyed visiting with his neighbors, playing cards on Wednesday and his morning coffee visitors. He was known by many as the "man with the beard" which he has had since 1977.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at the Madison Community Center with Reverend Lindsey Kohn and Reverend Larry Allen officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Madison Community Center on Tuesday. Interment will be at a later date.
