He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Harriet Ann Hayes.
Don Hayes served in the Army 1953 - 1954 and was a member of the 350th Infantry Regiment Chorus. He graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry in 1958. Don worked for Mead Johnson and then Bristol Myers Squibb as a research chemist for 29 years. He helped his wife raise four children and was an active member of Salem Church of Darmstadt, Indiana singing in the church choir for 50 years.
Don is survived by his son Mark Hayes (Kim) of Whiteland; three daughters Dee Ann Johnson (Rick) of Evansville, Jane Roberson of Cloverdale, and Elaine Daniels (Robin) of Evansville; brother Wayne (Judy) Hayes of Portland, Oregon; ten granddaughters Melanie Kane (Mike) of Ellettsville, Deanne Boston (Matt) of London, UK, Allison Hornaday (Adam) of Indianapolis, Rebecca Yunker (Tom) of Indianapolis, Jamie Beck (Michael) of Indianapolis, Nichole Alcorn (Daniel) of Evansville, Deanna George (Jesse) of Franklin, Jesse Messer (Dave) of Greencastle, Jill Buck (Brandon) of Evansville, Holly Payne (Austin) of Evansville; grandson David Daniels (Pantarah Gates) of Albion, IL; twenty-four great grandchildren Owen and Brynn McGovern, Sloane Boston, Reed and Nolan Hornaday, Lucas and Bennett Yunker, Evan and Mallory Beck, Allison, Autumn, and Annette Alcorn, Kayla and Kamryn Hoffman and Brooklyn George, Brycen and Piercen Krejckant and Rosalee and Maggie Messer, Valerie and Hazel Buck, Charlie and Kennedy Payne, and Daisy Daniels; sister-in-law, Patricia Hochstetler, of Evansville; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Salem Church of Darmstadt, 14134 Darmstadt Rd, Evansville, IN 47725 with Pastor David Peterson officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2022 from 9 AM to service time at the church.
