Services for former sheriff Robert Denney will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at CrystalRock Cathedral with Dr. Walt Spradling and Sheriff Don Waters officiating. Interment will be at Lone Grove Cemetery.
Denney died March 16, 1998, at his residence. He was born to Joe O. and Delia Denney April 23, 1926.
Denney served 38 years in law enforcement in southern Oklahoma. He started his career as constable in Lone Grove and was elected Carter County sheriff in 1970, serving until he retired in 1990. He was the longest-serving sheriff in Carter County. He was a member of Lone Grove Masonic Lodge No. 25 and served as deacon at CrystalRock Cathedral.
He is survived by his wife, Vanessa, of the home; sons, Charles, Oklahoma City, and Bobby, Lexington; daughters, Kim Hegwood, Germany, and Sharon Gates, Bartlesville; brothers, Vernon, Ardmore, and Wayne, Lone Grove; sisters, Helen Helms and Thelma Denney, Ardmore; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Jimmy; five brothers; and six sisters.
Bearers will be Bill Noland, Jack Pirtle, Bob Bell, Enoch Watterson, George Hunt and Larry Scott. Honorary bearers will be members of the Carter County Sheriff's Department, and Ray Pearson, Ralph and Farris Richards, Johnny Bogle and Jim Yell.
Memorials may be made to the Carter County Sheriff's Department training fund.
Services will be directed by Griffin-Kennedy-Watts Funeral Home.
