Mrs. Erwin, 98, formerly a longtime Caledonia resident, died Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2007) at Lake Winona Manor in Winona.
Miriam Evalyn Sheldon was born Nov. 25, 1909, in Pine Island. In 1931 she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., with a degree in romance languages. She married Ben "Ted" Erwin in 1935. The couple lived briefly in Winona and La Crescent, then made their home in Caledonia for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Erwin worked for Lloyd Duxbury as a legal secretary and for Les Joerg as an accounting secretary, then became bookkeeper for Ben Erwin and Son Construction. In the early 1960s, she earned a teaching degree, then taught elementary school in Rushford and Caledonia until the mid-1970s. In retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively, including to Europe and the Middle East. She was a member of Caledonia United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Aidenn Chapter 86 Order of the Eastern Star in Caledonia.
Survivors include three sons, Richard (Christine) of Price, Utah, Dr. James (Gretchen) of Winona and Steve (Peggy) of Plainview; a daughter, Dr. Carol Erwin of Brownsville, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, two daughters, three brothers and a sister.
Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home in Caledonia, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the church. Memorials are preferred to Caledonia United Methodist Church or Lake Winona Manor.
