Alton Johnston Ackiss was the son of Paul W. Ackiss and his wife, Josephine Sikes/Sykes. He was married to Elizabeth Armistead Blackwell on May 1, 1937 in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach).

Princess Anne County, Virginia marriage records show the following -
"Married May 1, 1937 - Alton Johnston Ackiss, single, and Elizabeth Armistead Blackwell, single - Alton Johnston Ackiss, age 29, born in and residing in Back Bay [Princess Anne County], Virginia, occupation Farmer, son of Paul Whitehead Ackiss and his wife, Josephine Sykes - Elizabeth Armistead Blackwell, age 22, born in Nelson County, Virginia & residing in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, daughter of Charles Leshi Blackwell and his wife, Frances Wade Beasch"
