Relief Pitcher for farm club of the New York Yankees, called Quincey (Illinois) Gems. He started his baseball career playing for the Joplin Miners, and was a teammate of Mickey Mantle. In the book written by Mickey Mantle, entitled "The Mick," Mickey made mention of his teammate on more than one occasion. Another book written by John G Hall named Mickey Mantle: Before the Glory also mentions Joe Dean. He was the son of Omer Vernon Crowder and Pauline Hope Comstock Crowder and husband of Mary Belle Martin. He and Mary had two young children, Bobby Joe Crowder and Beverly Ann Crowder when he drowned at Port Arthur near Disney, Oklahoma while fishing. He also left siblings: Norma Lee Crowder, Martha Jane Crowder, Clifford Vernon Crowder and Garland Ervan Crowder. After his untimely death, a group of New York Yankees did a benefit ball game to raise money for Joe Dean's young widow and his two young children.
