Cecil Clinton Smith of Rogue River died Dec. 27, 2021, at his home.

Cecil Clinton Smith, 85, passed away quietly on Dec. 27, 2021, at his residence. He was a loving husband for almost 62 years to Alice (Nita). They married June 8, 1959, and raised four children together.

He was born on Sept. 19, 1936, and raised in Aurora, Mo., he lived with his mother Molly, and stepfather William; also his father Elvin, and at times stepmother Annie. He talked about all the memories of his brothers Howard, Kenneth, Leroy, Floyd and Billie; and sisters, Delores, Hazel, Lois, Doris, Dorothy; and his five nieces and seven nephews.

Cecil moved to Oregon in August 1953, living with his brother Leroy and sister-in-law Marylou.

He graduated from Eugene High; Reedley College; and Southern Oregon University with an associate degree, bachelor's degree, and literature diploma.

He worked for Southern Credit Bureau and at Gates Furniture, where he met his wife. He also worked several mills, but was at Tim Ply Co. for 23 years.

He was a member of Redwood Country Church for 20 years. He also attended Calvary church, and Evans Creek church. He loved socializing with all the other church members. Nita often had to send one of the children to remind him, "We are all waiting in the car."

He enjoyed his draft horses, farming, horseback riding, biking, reading, taking walks, which he was still doing at 85, and gardening. He started and cared for a flower garden at Tim Ply Co. He ran a bull breeding service with his kids for years. He loved giving hay rides to the community with his team.

Cecil loved genealogy, teaching it, and sharing it with Carla. He wrote a book of his childrens' family lineage. He ran for county commissioner in 1976. Cecil was also involved in the PTA and 4-H. He was always helping others, including Ontario State Prison, where he worked as a teacher helping men get their G.E.Ds.

He loved to work hard, something he taught all his kids, "No stopping until the job is done."

He lived in Grants Pass most of his life with homes in Amity, Ontario, and Wimer, Ore.

Cecil is survived by children Rita Guylene and husband Gary King, Happy Camp, Calif.; Kerman Smith, Rogue River, Ore.; Hurshell Clinton, Chehailis, Wash.; and Carla Guylene, engaged to Donald Peariso; seven grandkids, James, Katie, Leanna, Steven, Michael, Megan, and Ashley; great-grandkids Elijah, Isaiah, Azariah, Benton, Elle, Abby, Elizabeth, Scarlett, and Iris.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nita, great-grandson Noah, and most of his siblings, including Wanita Amos and Harriet as children.

His children and grandchildren were his world. He loved them all dearly!

A private graveside service at Hillcrest Memorial Park was held.

There will be a memorial service and potluck reception at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, at Redwood Country Church.
