Jerry M. Fry, age 65, of Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully surrounded by all his family on Sunday, January 2, 2022 at St. Luke's Hospital from heart disease. Services for Jerry will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 16000 W. 143rd Street, Olathe, Kansas 66062. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Rosary at 9:45 a.m. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Raytown, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his father, Glen Fry. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Kapsch of Olathe, KS; three sisters, Susan Ward (David) of Richland, WA, Theresa Julkowski (Daniel) of Lee's Summit, MO and Elizabeth Fry of Sante Fe, NM. He also leaves behind all his nephews and nieces, Benjamin Ward (Kathryn) and children: Theresa, Lily, Daniel, Joseph, and Philip; Christopher Ward; Mathew Ward and daughter Ava Ward; Kevin Ward (Stephanie) and children: Katelyn, Lindsey, and Megan; Irene Julkowski and daughter Anna Julkowski; and Esthela Julkowski. Jerry attended St. Catherine's Catholic grade school and graduated from Ruskin High School in 1974 where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He received a BA in Foreign Language from Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville in 1977. He worked for the Social Security Administration for 42 years being promoted to several different positions and receiving many awards. He was passionate about his job and seemed to always try to find better ways to improve his workflow. He encouraged his coworkers to learn about the job because he told them "I may not always be here, someday I could be hit by a train." Jerry had a love of photography which he used during his many travels. He had a special knack for taking close up pictures of flowers like the one he captured of a hummingbird drinking nectar from a bird of paradise flower. Another special picture was taken while snowflakes were falling on his scarf that he was wearing which revealed the uniqueness of each snowflake. He admired the notable designs of buildings and knew just how to get the best architectural shot of a building.
If you ever needed to know the answer to a trivia question, just ask Jerry. He was as sharp as a tack. We always believed he would have been a great contestant on Jeopardy. He was a member of the Kansas City Zoo. He knew it so well he should have given guided tours that would have included watching the Kangaroos answer the dinner bell to go into the nightly enclosure. He was an expert at photographing all sorts of different animals from zoos across the country. His patience of waiting for the perfect picture paid off with some outstanding and memorable snapshots. His tenor voice will be greatly missed by all the choirs he used to sing with. He started singing with the church choir at Richards-Gebaur AFB when he was a teenager. He moved on to sing with the Pontifical Choir at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kansas City. Under the direction of Father Ambrose Karels, he learned to sing many unique and challenging songs in Latin. From there he sang at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church where he was a lead cantor and helped develop that choir. He felt honored to be requested as a cantor for so many funeral masses. He also knew how to play the piano and growing up would play duets with his mom. The most important thing in his life was his love for his family. He was very generous with his time and showered his family with many gifts for holidays and birthdays. His gifts were always unique and special to each person. He added to the family gatherings with his quick wit and funny banter. He was always so much fun to be around. His thoughtfulness and humor will be forever missed. The most precious gift was his very last one which was given to many unknown recipients because he was an organ donor.
