On September 18, 1995, James was united in marriage to the former Connie Wilson; she preceded him in death in 2017. At the age of 16 he served as a volunteer for the Dry Ridge Fire Department. By 1986 he was a professional fire fighter for the City of Covington. After 20 dedicated years of service, at the age of 43, he retired from the City of Covington. He continued using his firefighting expertise as a Sales Rep for Scott Safety Air packs, Morning Pride Turnout Gear and Amkus Rescue Systems. Later, he and his wife, Connie, bought a Snap-on Tool Franchise; in 2008, James was the recipient of the "Rookie of the Year" Award. He was a 1981 graduate of Grant Co. High School and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Florence.
He leaves to carry on his legacy, his mother: Luane A. Whitaker of Williamstown; one son: James Orlin "J.O." Whitaker, III of Williamstown; one daughter: Samantha Darlene Whitaker of Florence; one brother: Kevin (Paula) Whitaker of Williamstown, along with a grandson: Isaiah Whitaker.
Visitation will be Monday January 10, 2022 from 12 Noon till 2:00 p.m. at Stanley Funeral Homes (Williamstown location). Funeral services will begin at 2:00. Full Firefighter Honors will be observed. Burial will follow in Hill Crest Cemetery in Dry Ridge.
