Sonya was born Feb. 27, 1940, in Paris, Texas. She was a member of Calvary Methodist and Glenview Baptist Church. Sonya graduated from East Texas State University and was an alumnus of Texas A&M. She had been a dedicated first grade teacher at South Birdville Elementary for 38 years and retired in 1999. She was preceded in death by her father, J.W. Hicklen, and mother, Lorene Cockrum.
Survivors: She leaves behind her husband, Kenneth Mitchell; daughter, Cynthia Nowell; granddaughter, Kenan Nowell; mother-in-law, Sybil Mitchell; and father-in-law, Jake Cockrum.
