GWINN, MI - Gregory Noel "Homer" Burns, age 46, of Sawyer, former Big Bay and Marquette resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at Munising Memorial Hospital following a ten month illness.
Born November 29, 1973, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a son of Noel C. and Helen Jean (Bullock) Burns, Greg was raised in Big Bay where he earned the nickname "Homer". His childhood was spent in the usual pursuits of fishing, hanging around with his friends, and playing baseball and softball. He attended Powell Township School and graduated from Marquette Senior High School, Class of 1991, and attended Northern Michigan University where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business. Throughout the years Greg was employed at Cram's General Store and Perkins Park in Big Bay, Norlite Nursing Center as a CNA, worked as a Blackjack dealer at the Ojibwa Casino in Harvey, and finally at Global Response at Sawyer where he managed calls at the center for various organizations. In the summer of 2006, Greg moved to Marquette and has since resided at Sawyer for the past eight years. In May, Greg entered MediLodge of Munising due to illness. Greg was an avid sports fan his entire life. He coached and umpired the Big Bay Little League teams for many years and was always willing to share his time and knowledge. For many years he was a part time caregiver for his mother and some other local residents, and was always willing to help those in need. Greg attended the Silver Creek Church in Harvey where he regularly assisted with audio visual matters and helped with church sponsored block parties.
Greg is survived by his mother, Helen Jean Burns of Sawyer; a sister, Beth Burns of Sawyer; brothers, Dale (Rebecca) Burns of Plainwell, Mark (Krystal) Burns of Champion, and Matthew (Kimberly) Burns of Novi; nephews, Aaron, Colin, Brandon, and Ryan Burns; his longtime companion and fiancée, Cristina Heiliger of Sawyer and her children, Jason, Julia, Krystofer, and Rabeckah all of North Carolina; and special youth he assisted in raising who thought of him as a father figure, Dylan Wise of Mount Pleasant and Gavin Wise of Marquette; along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Noel in 2001 and both paternal and maternal grandparents.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
