He became an army chaplain in 1854 and in the Crimean war was present with the 3rd Division at Sebastopol in 1854 and Inkerman. He was invalided home in 1856 with a broken leg. He was assistant chaplain in Sheffield, England in 1858, being promoted to chaplain in 1859, at a salary of £250 plus £55 allowances. He died of Yellow Fever in Barbados, leaving a wife and two daughters.
