John's boyhood ambition was to be an attorney. He graduated from Turkey Run High School in 1971. He then graduated from Wabash College in 1975 and Indiana University School of Law in 1978. He was admitted to plead before the Indiana Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court. John was a member of the Indiana State Bar Association and served on the Board of Governors.
In addition to his private practice in Rockville, Indiana, he served as counsel to numerous county and municipal bodies in Parke County. His civic involvements included Finance Committee at the Marshall Federated Church and Board member for the Parke County Community Foundation.
John is survived by his wife, Kim Asbury; 3 children, Michael Woody (Nikki), Rachel Asbury (Josh Bundy) and Samuel Asbury; 9 grandchildren and bonus grandchildren. Also, surviving are his mother, Eleanor Asbury, brother, Charles Leland Asbury and sister, Susan Asbury Holley and several nieces and nephews. His family was his joy!
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold Lurton Asbury.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Marshall Federated Church, 105 N. Main Street, Marshall, Indiana, with Pastor Brian Holt officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 7, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Bethany Cemetery, east of Marshall. Care is entrusted to Barnes and Rice Funeral Home of Rockville.
