Dorothy "Dot" Scruggs Yarbrough
JAN 15, 1932 – DEC 31, 2021

Last of the six sisters born to Horace V. and Ruth Underwood Scruggs, Dot was predeceased by her husband, James Horace Yarbrough, Sr. and son, James Horace Yarbrough, Jr. and her nephew Ricky Ward and nieces Joy Hulgan and Debbie (Mike) C. Liles. Her sisters were: Edna Scruggs, Mary (Joe) Scruggs Hulgan, Clara (Ray) Scruggs Ward Fowler, Rachel (Gerald) Scruggs Camp and Edith Scruggs.

An avid singer with a beautiful voice, Dorothy sang with the Singing Saints, The Macon Civic Chorale and the choir at Forest Hills United Methodist Church. She had the joy of singing patriotic tunes at the foot of The Statue of Liberty with a touring bunch of Macon singers as well as performing elsewhere in New York City. She was also a talented watercolor artist and studied at Theresa Rhett English's La Famiglia Studio with many other talented Macon artists - including her sister Mary Hulgan - for many years.

She graduated from A. L. Miller High School for Girls and attended Mercer University where she met her husband-to-be Horace. She competed in The Miss Macon Pageant, a Miss America preliminary the year Miss Neva Jane Langley continued on to become Miss America. She and Horace were avid Georgia Bulldog fans - rarely missing a game!

Early in their marriage, she was Office Manager for New York Life Insurance. She left that position when her son, Jay was born in 1966. She became a full time, wife, mother and homemaker. Years later, Dorothy was the cheery, beautifully blue-eyed front register clerk at ChiChester's on Vineville.

She was a delightful lady who was always eager to help! She was a great cook and made the best divinity! She loved to have fun and wanted you to have fun too! Mostly, she loved her Lord!

She will be sorely missed by those many who love her! But she was ready for "Papa and Granny and my sisters to come get me!"

Dot lived on Ousley Place until her home of 48 years was demolished by a tornado. She then moved to The Cottages on Wesleyan where she lived for ten years before moving to Antebellum one month before her death.

She is survived by nieces and nephews: Beth W. Hatcher, Bonnie W. Kaplan, Dianne (Steve) C. Ellis, Jimmy Ward, Jan (Dave) H. Hutchinson, Jil (Frank) H. Pinkston, Jef (Jennifer) Hulgan and many great nieces and great nephews.

Services will be held at Macon Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Thursday, January 6, 2022 at 11:00 with longtime family friend, Mark Hudgins officiating. Visitation will immediately follow the services at The Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to: Pine Pointe Hospice who wonderfully and compassionately cared for Dorothy during her last days or to Mary's Garden at The Museum of Arts & Sciences, (her sister Mary Hulgan's Memorial Garden) or Forest Hills United Methodist Church.
