Austrian military leader. Born at Toce (Tootzen) estate near Ļaudona (Laudohn), Livonia (actual Latvia), died at Nový Jicín (neu-Titschein, Moravia). A cadet in the Russian army. As from 1741 in Austrian service. 1757 Major-general of the cavalry. Distinguished in the battles of Domašov and Hochkirch (1758), during the Seven Years' War against Prussia. On 12 August 1759, together with the Russian leader Pjotr Semjonowitsch Saltykov, victorious at Kunersdorf against Frederic II. Later commander in the victorious battles of Landeshut and Glatz. Unsuccessful at Liegnitz (1761). Since 1778 as Field marshal in the War of the Bavarian Succession, later on the Balkans, capturing Belgrade in 1789.
