US Congressman. He studied law, attained admission to the bar and became an attorney in Lancaster County. Whitehill also operated Strasburg's largest store, served as its first Postmaster, and was a director of its first bank. In 1811 he became Associate Judge of the Lancaster County Court, serving until February, 1813, when he resigned to take his seat in Congress. In 1812 he was the successful Democratic-Republican nominee for the US House of Representatives and served part of one term, March, 1813 to September, 1814. A longtime member of the militia, Whitehill resigned from Congress to serve as Major General and commander of Pennsylvania's Fourth Division during the War of 1812. When Strasburg became a Borough in 1816 Whitehill became its first Chief Burgess. He returned to the bench in 1820, serving until his death as Associate Judge of the Lancaster County Court. His father John Whitehill and uncle Robert Whitehill also served as members of Congress.
