Professional and All-American college football player. After graduating from Ramsay High School in Birmingham, Edward Joseph Salem had a stellar career as a quarterback and defensive back at the University of Alabama. In 1950 he was a first team All-American. He was taken in the 2nd round of the NFL draft and played for the Washington Redskins in 1951. He played twelve regular season games as a quarterback and defensive back for the Redskins. He did better on defense than offense, tallying five interceptions that he ran back for a total of 26 yards. He played with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League in 1952. He was a cafe owner, real estate developer, and owner of several bowling alleys and a travel agency. He died of complications from diabetes.
