Sarah attended The Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky. Miss Lucas School, Providence, Rhode Island, and Miss Bristol's School in Washington, D.C. A member of First Baptist Church in Paris where she was active in the Women's Missionary Union and a charter member of the Bourbon County Garden Club.
Sarah married James William Thompson on December 8, 1917 in Lexington. To this union two sons were born, William Overton Chenault Thompson (1923-2002) and James William Thompson, Jr. (1926-1987).
Six grandsons, Robert G. Thompson, James H. Thompson, Van C. Thompson, William T. Thompson, Trenton C. Thompson, and Owen R. Thompson. Thirteen great-grandchildren.
