The inscription should read 'SS Khersonese', not Hersonese. This was an Alexander auxilliary steamer with sails having 3 masts and a funnel. It was built in 1855 and owned by Liverpool, Newfoundland and Halifax SN and Co, later taken over by Ellerman Wilson. One of the captains of the ship was the famous Cpt Robert Charles Halpin who laid transatlantic cables. Hull museums have a watercolour of the vessel
