Roger and his brother, Larry, grew up on their family farm near Seaman, Ohio. After graduating from Seaman High School in 1964, Roger attended Clark Tech in Springfield, Ohio, studying agriculture.
He then went on to proudly serve in Vietnam as part of the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion of The Big Red One. After his return, he worked as a dock worker and a truck driver for Wilson Freight, and, later on, he drove a truck for Victory Express. Roger had a love for driving trucks across the states for 45 years, which carried him into retirement with US Xpress in 2018.
After retirement, Roger and his friend, Janet, spent four weeks traveling the western United States. He enjoyed studying the stars and planets and was a member of the Miami Valley Astronomical Society. He also loved airplanes and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). He liked watching western movies and listening to classic country music.
He is survived by his son, Christopher (Susan) Young; his daughter, Tara (Steve) Novak; his brother, Larry (Carol) Young; seven grandchildren; and his friend, Janet Smith.
He is preceded in death by his son, Seth; his father, Norman; and his mother, Ruth.
The memorial service will be held at the Dayton National Cemetery.
