John was a WWII veteran where he proudly served in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a longtime faithful member of White Station Church of Christ in Memphis, Tennessee, where he also served on the advisory board of Memphis Harding Academy. He retired to Hot Springs Village and was an active member of the Village Church of Christ.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maurice Matthews; three brothers; and one sister
