Michael Layne Butler, 74, of Boone, Iowa passed away at his home in Boone on Thursday, December 30, 2021. Michael was born on July 4, 1947 in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of Edward Leon Butler and Nancy Lorene Huffman. He graduated from Pompano Beach High School in Pompano Beach, Florida.

In March of 1968 he married Barbara Carlson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone, Iowa. Shortly after their marriage, Michael was drafted into the Army and served from 1968 until 1970. After being discharged from the Army, he attended Florida Atlantic University and graduated with a degree in business administration. In 1979 he and Barb moved back to Iowa, where Michael worked in various sales positions until he retired.

Michael served in the U.S. Army and the National Guard. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone and Pheasants Forever. When he was younger, Michael worked on charter fishing boats all over the world and continued to be an avid fisherman throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Lorene Butler; brother Rich Butler; sister Jessie Bowland and nephew Alex Bowland.

Michael is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Butler; son Mike F. Butler; daughter Jennifer L. (Jonathan) Makovec; grandchildren: Leon and Harrison Makovec; brother Daniel (Margaret) Butler; niece Laura Barloga, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone, with Reverend Jessten Heimer officiating. Interment will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel at a later date. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home in Boone.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church in Boone.
