Daughter of Samuel Hemenway and Maria Wells. The family moved to Geauga County, Ohio sometime in the 1830's. She married William Wilson of Kirtland in 1848. She began her medical studies in Ohio, then the Wilson family moved west to California. William's sisters also went west. William died in 1876 in Marysville. Marilla eventually settled in Oakland; she was the first female medical doctor in that city. She remarried to an Irish doctor, Gabriel Henry Stockham, who died in 1897. Her son, Arno Wilson, ran Wilson's Inn on Atlas Peak, in Napa, California.
