Jazz Musician. Legendary Canadian-born composer and jazz pianist. Considered by many to be one of the greatest piano players of all time. His virtuosity and command of the piano have routinely stunned audiences worldwide for more than fifty years. His illustrious career included playing with such early music greats as Nat King Cole, Milt Jackson, Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Stephane Grappelli, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz, Teddy Wilson, James P. Johnson, and Art Tatum. He also recorded some 200 albums. For his contributions to music Peterson has also been awarded with several honors including eight Grammy Awards, the 1987 Roy Thomson Award, the 1993 Glenn Gould Prize, the 1997 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2000 UNESCO Music Prize, the Toronto Musicians' Association Musician of the Year Award (2001), and more recently the BBC-Radio Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also been honored with a Canadian stamp and several institutes or parks being named for him. From 1991 to 1994, he served as the Chancellor of York University in Toronto. In failing health for many years, Peterson passed away at the age of 82, at his home in Mississauga, Ontario, from kidney failure.
