Mr. Jud Key age 76 of Carthage was pronounced deceased at 1:58 a.m. Tuesday morning December 28, 2021 at the Riverview Regional Medical Center in Carthage after suffering an apparent fatal heart attack at his Ward Avenue home.

Bro. Jimmy Gregory officiated at the 11 a.m. Friday morning December 31st funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Garden of the Cross at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

One of seven children born to the late Anderson Dewey Key who died at the age of 60 on March 4, 1972 and Lucy Mai Comstock Key who died at the age of 83 on January 11, 1999, he was born Gerald Dewayne Key in the Tanglewood Community on December 23, 1945.

He was preceded in death by four siblings, Shirley Ann Key Phillips who died March 28, 2000 at the age of 53, Baxter Ellen Key Bane who died at the age of 67 on March 30, 2004, J. D. Key Sr. who died November 13, 2013 at the age of 74 and A. D. Key who died January 2, 2021 at the age of 82.

Mr. Key's first wife and the mother of their six children, Maggie May Nannie Key, died at the age of 63 on March 10, 2007. A grandson, David Jenkins, preceded him in death on February 21, 2021 at the age of 30.

On August 2, 2013 Mr. Key was united in marriage to the former Emily Mai Gregory.

Mr. Key was a longtime cattleman working both at Gore Farms in the Elmwood Community and later for the late James T. "Pete" Watts in Gordonsville on their farms.

After a short stint at the zinc mine he began employment with the Smith County Highway Department in 2010, where he was still employed at the time of his untimely death. He operated the bush hog tractor which cut right-of-ways.

Mr. Key was an avid coon hunter and enjoyed showing his coon dogs in competitions.

Mr. Key was saved at the Carthage Free Holiness Church in Carthage as a young man.

Surviving in addition to his wife Emily of just over eight years are his six children, Cindy Key and Bobbie Key both of Carthage, Roy Key and wife Rita of South Carthage, Scottie Key of Hartsville, Donnie Key and wife Suzanne of Alexandria, Jeffrey Key of Carthage; two step-children, Stacey Norris of Livingston and Tyler Blanks of Carthage; two sisters, Diane Key Langley of Coats, North Carolina, and Bonnie May McCormick of Lebanon; grandchildren, Travis Key, Amy Key, Lucas Key, D. J. Key, Jenna Hough, Logan Vanatta, Devin Vanatta, J. D. Key, Brenee Key, Tanisha Templeton, Christopher Blackwell, Michael Wayne Blackwell, Evelyn Dishman and four great-grandchildren.
