Jerry Phillip Montgomery was born in Tecumseh, Oklahoma on February 19, 1949 to Beulah and Robert Montgomery. He was the 8th of 10 children, only two of which were boys. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1967, where he played baseball and football, and served as senior class president. In June of that year Jerry enlisted in the US Army, and served in the 82nd Airborne during the Vietnam War. Jerry was in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, and later in the war survived a crash that destroyed the helicopter on which he was riding. Honorably discharged at the rank of staff Sargent, Jerry went on to become a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in Denison, Texas, a career he worked in diligently and honorably until his retirement.

Jerry will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind, humble, and honest man, as well as a dedicated Little League coach to his sons, and a well-read and knowledgeable scholar of Texas history. Jerry and his wife, Debbie, were members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Denison. After retirement, Jerry filled his days delivering for Meals on Wheels throughout Grayson County, assisting other veterans with filing their disability paperwork at the local VA Administration, and tending to his garden and countless houseplants, which he loved dearly. Jerry was also an extremely talented guitar player and songwriter. Many warm summer nights will be remembered with Jerry playing the guitar and singing to his family.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Debbie, sons Shane Montgomery, Shannon Montgomery, Jeremy Montgomery, daughter Amy Montgomery, stepson Jeffrey Fielder and stepdaughter Kristi Neal, sisters Barbara Meador, Marilyn Linduff, Glenda McCabe, Vera Martin, Ruth Boren, Karen Grundy, Doris Brockett, Debra Spruill, brother Robert Montgomery, and 13 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 pm Thursday at Waldo Funeral Home, with a graveside service following at 3:30 pm Thursday at Cedarlawn Memorial Park.
