W.H. Gray died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Caroline Agusta Kammin
Portland yesterday morning of general debility. He was born in
Fairfield, Herkimer Co. New York, September 10, 1810 and was 79 years 2
months 4 days old. He grew to manhood in New York and left April 15,
1836 in the company of Dr. Marcus Whitman, Rev.M. Spaulding and others
for the region known as Oregon as a secular agent of the American board
of foreign missions under Presbyterian auspices.
They reached what is Waiilatpu on 2 Sept 1836. In the spring of 1837 he returned
to New York and married Miss Mary Augusta Dix. He took up a land claim.
on what is now known as Delura Beach. He also built a family residence
near the Parker House in Astoria. He wrote a book , "History of
Oregon." '
Since the death of his wife on 8 December 1881 he has lived a life of
seclusion. Children surviving him are Capt.John D.Henry Gray of this city,
Mrs Mary s Tarbell of Tacoma, Mrs Sarah Abernathy, Capt. William Polk Gray of Pasco,Wash., A.W. Gray and Mrs Caroline Augusta Kamm of Portland. Capt. James Taylor Gray of Vancouver, Wash. In accordance with his last wishes he will be interred in Hillside cemetery beside his wife. (The Presbyterian bell was rung.) He and his wife were charter members of the Presbyterian church on Clatsop

Pall bears were F.J. Taylor, E.A. Taylor, B. Van Dusen, W.B. Adair, S.D. Adair, R.N. Carnahan, Harry Hobson. Bent. Morrison, Ernest Ferguson, Eben Rogers.
lt is believed his body and stone were moved to Waiilatpu in 1916, where the
Whitman massacre took" place. Mr Gray was involved in a monument installed there before his death.(see Pioneer Recollections ADEJune 26, 1914.)
