Shirley Virginia Brown Griffin, 98, passed away on Friday, Dec. 24, 2021 in Fuquay-Varina, NC. Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Willard Herbert Brown and Elizabeth Williamson Brown; and sister to the late T. Lee Brown, Alma B. Collins, and Leona Turner Flood. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Edward Grey Griffin and her daughter, Sheryl Griffin Hamberg, both dearly loved.
Shirley graduated from Norfolk's Maury High School, after which she was a Service Representative for C&P Telephone Company. She was a member of First Christian Church for 62 years, many contributing as a Sunday School teacher. Shirley also faithfully offered her home multiple years to Bible Studies, for women in the a.m. and for couples with Eddie in the evening.
Shirley was an active past member of Norfolk's Junior Women's Club, and the Lakewood Garden Club. She was a deep-rooted resident of Virginia for 95 years, where nieces and nephews of several generations, and long-term family friends remember Shirley fondly.
Left to cherish her memory are Shirley's daughters Ginger G. Nilsen (husband Bob) of Raleigh, NC, and Lynn G. Ashworth (husband Joe) of Fuquay-Varina, NC. She is survived by five grandchildren and their spouses, and seven great grandchildren – all of NC. Jacob Schachle (wife Amanda), Zachary Schachle (wife Abigail), and Seth Schachle (wife Morgan); and Cori Lee Nilsen Frye (husband Jason) and Ryan Nilsen (wife Emily). Great Grandma Shirley's biggest joy in NC has been Gracelyn and Maeleigh (daughters of Jacob), Tyler Rae and Ada Grey (daughters of Zachary), and Nash Schachle (son of Seth); and Alayla Stewart-Nilsen (daughter of Ryan). Her last little blessing was Selene Grey Frye, due any day (daughter of Cori).
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
