Daughter of Henry A and Marguerite Ketchmark Mehrens. She met and married her future husband, Richard L Rice, a student attending Creighton University Law School, in 1948. She was a graduate of the University of Nebraska School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse for many years at the University Hospital in Augusta GA, Walton Army Hospital in Fort Dix, NJ, and Moody Nursing Home in Decatur GA. While stationed at various military bases with her husband, she taught catechism and served as an officer's wife in various capacities. She moved to Savannah in 1978 and was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church, a tutor at St. James Catholic School for over 15 years and volunteered to feed the hungry at various charitable organizations in Savannah GA. She enjoyed playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Leo Rice; and daughters, Monica Cunard*, Mary Rice and Deborah Rice. Surviving are her children, Susan Rice (Mike Sheppard) and Richard Rice (Jean); grandchildren, Jessica Futrell (Bryn), Zachary Woods (Jennifer), John Michael Cunard, Jr., Michelle Smith (Scott), Christine Sheppard, Paula Sheppard, and Stephanie Sheppard (Joel Laufenberg); great grandchildren, Logan Fleming (Jean), Aidan Laufenberg, Declan Laufenberg, Delaney Laufenberg, Charlotte Futrell, and Cooper Fleming; and niece, Marguerite Russold and her children, Julia and Freddie.
