Richard E. Alexander, age 82, of Lamar, Mo., passed away at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at Barton County Memorial Hospital.

Richard was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Springfield, Mo., to Ira and Blanche (Guthrie) Alexander. He was a 1943 graduate of Lamar High School and attended Missouri University. A longtime Lamar resident and merchant, Richard first owned and operated Western Auto in Golden City, then Alexander's Five and Dime and the Lamar Ben Franklin. He was a dedicated community leader who developed the Lamar Lake property, served in the Chamber of Commerce, Lamar Rotary and the Metro Club. Many will remember him by the enjoyment he provided through his band, "Dick Alexander and His Orchestra." He was an active member of Lamar Christian Church.

On Jan. 1, 2001, in Lamar, Dick married Ruth (Deragowski) Harris. She survives.

Also surviving are a stepson, Greg Harris, rural Lamar; two stepdaughters, Cheryl and husband, Randy Scholze, San Antonio, Texas, and Carol and husband, Randy Davis, Lamar; a sister-in-law, Arlene Alexander, St. Louis; a cousin, Dan Achord, New Jersey; a niece and nephew; and three step grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by a son, David Alexander; and a brother, Stanley "Gene" Alexander.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Thursday. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to The Brain Trauma Foundation in care of Daniel Funeral Home.
