John is the son of James William & Eliza E. (Winfree) Gibson. He married Leila Susanna Shaver on July 16, 1912.

John H. Gibson worked for Western Union and was known as one of the best telegraph sports reporters in the nation. Known to sports fans as Silent John and Gibby, he also covered the news of baseball, football and hockey.
