He had a meow that sounded like the word "Mao" (like Chairman Mao) and he literally reached out of his cage at the shelter and tapped me (like a person would) to get my attention that day.

He was a very big cat with a permanently crumpled ear and he loved to cozy up to total strangers.

It was fun to try to decide what type of life he had before the shelter. We often joked that maybe he had previously been owned by a band of happy hippies who lived in a commune. That could explain why he was so gregarious. It was clear that he had been very loved by someone before we met him. In many ways he was a dog-like cat, running to the door when the doorbell rang. He would loudly Mao at whoever it was until they petted him. It was determined that he had always been an indoor cat, however, because one time he dashed out the door onto our driveway, only to spin around in a hysterical manner and run straight back inside.

They told me at the shelter that he was probably already around 10 years old when I got him. I always wondered how this fantastic cat (with impeccable manners and a great personality) wound up in a county shelter. When I brought him home my then husband said "Yes, someone must be wondering...where is ......Ruggles?" It was just a name that he pulled out of the sky but it seemed exactly right. I had Ruggles for 10 years so he was an old guy in the end, but he always seemed youthful.

I ultimately decided that Ruggles' previous owner must have died. Certainly whoever lost such a cat would have searched the world over for him, if only they could. If it is true that people and their pets are reunited at the rainbow bridge..then Ruggles is with his original owner now and they both have to be happy. I told him that day..two years ago today when I had to have him put to sleep..that now maybe he'll see his first owner..but that when I get there that person will have to share him with me. I just know it will be alright with everyone.

In the very end he rode in the car on my lap over to the Vet's for his treatments. He liked to look out the window, just like a dog. Happy anniversary of your rainbow-bridge Day, Ruggles. It was so hard to part with you..I honestly thought my heart would break in two.
