Lou was the 4th of 8 known children of Thomas Lilley Louis Pearson (1847-1930) & Susan Heath (1847-1899).


On 8 Jan 1902 Lou enlisted to serve in the South African Boer War at Addington. He served as #6096 with the 8th Contingent. He noted his father as next of kin, but noted his address as care of his sister Mary Lavinia (Mrs Sam Newburn) at Kaitangata; and his employer as the Kaitangata Coal Company. He noted he had been drafted from the Kaitangata Rifles with whom he had been a member for 18 months.

On 3 June 1904 Lou collected his war medals at Westport

After his brother William Louis was killed in the Millerton Disaster in 1927, their father and some of their siblings stopped mining and moved to Masterton, where sister Elizabeth Maria was already living.
