He worked as a Certified Public Accountant and later started his company James Richards Associates. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Catherine Elaine Richards; son, James C "Jimmy" Richards, Jr.; brothers, Harold Richards and BC Richards; and sisters, Catherine Beasley, Barbara Perkins, Dorothy Hutchison, and Virginia Olson. Surviving are his daughters, Molly Black and husband, Kliff of Granbury, Beth McCurdy and husband, Pat of Decatur, Gay Trachta and husband, Wayne of Decatur; grandchildren, Jennifer Collins and husband, Shay, Stephanie Strange and husband, Nathan, Yates McCurdy and wife, Meagan, Lauren Prestifilippo and husband, Rocky, Cole McCurdy and wife, Chelsea, Reagan Trachta, Kendall Trachta, Nicholas Trachta and fiance Brynn Sutherland, and Cameron Sinex and husband, Walker; and great-grandchildren, Zane Collins, Emma Collins, Stokes McCurdy, Leo Prestifilippo, Andie McCurdy, and Emory Sinex.
