Tail Gunner aboard B-24J Liberator #44-40245, nicknamed "Skerby."
While on a supply drop mission out of Norfolk, England, to support the 17th Airborne Division during Operation Varsity, the Rhine crossing in Germany, the airplane was shot down by anti-aircraft flak and crashed near Wesel, Germany. Seven crew members were killed and two parachuted out and survived (the pilot and radio operator).
