FORT MYERS, Fla. — Lee Andrew Anthony, 95, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021, at his residence. Formerly of Niles, he had been a resident of Fort Myers for the past 34 years.

He was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Petrolia, Pa., the son of the late Glenn A. and Reatha M. Hilty Anthony.

Mr. Anthony was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army from 1944 to 1946. He was stationed in Japan and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan.

Lee married the love of his life that he affectionately called "Love," Ruth Irene McCormick on Jan. 3, 1945. When he came home from the war, he and Ruth settled in Ohio, where they began their family. His love of cars started at the age of 9, when he first drove a Ford Model T before purchasing a 1941 Chevrolet Convertible when he was 15 years-old. In 1947, he and his father opened and operated Anthony Auto Sales located in Niles. When times were slow for the car business, they would sell Christmas trees on the lot with lights aglow. He loved the Lord and served as a deacon at First Christian Church in Niles for many years.

After his family had grown and married, he and Ruth retired and moved to Fort Myers, Fla., where they resided in a retirement community, garnering many friends, playing shuffleboard, hand and foot and an occasional game of poker with his buddies. He also enjoyed his collection of model cars. Lee took countless rides on his golf cart and spoke to everyone in the park; he never knew a stranger. Every evening before he went to sleep, he would have his coffee pot ready to go for the morning and he would eat his powdered sugar donuts. A simple life was lived by Lee and Ruth and it proved to serve them well. They are both dearly missed.

Survivors include his children, Sandra (John) Haldie of Bonita Springs, Fla., George (Cindy) Anthony of Orlando, Fla., Kathy Eddy of Youngstown, Ohio and Ruth (Basil) Polivka of Charlotte, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Ruth Irene Anthony in 2016; and siblings, Ralph Anthony, Ida Loudin and Vivian Markle.

A funeral service with military honors will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, at Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home, 28300 Tamiami Trail, S. Bonita Springs, Fla. 34134, where the family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until the start of the service. He will be laid to rest beside Ruth at Pineview Memorial Park in Warren.
