John was born in Los Angeles California on April 11, 1937. He spent his childhood hitching trains to the beach, racing cars in the LA River, and horsing around with his two older brothers. After high school John began working for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, a career spanning almost forty years and two states.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 31 years, Judith Harrington. After a rewarding career with LADWP, John and Judith built an insurance business together—Ashley Insurance Company—named after their daughter. John is survived by his four children, Rex Harrington, Kim Fuller, Christy Harrington, and Ashley Harrington.
Boating with family and friends brought John immense joy in the more than fifty years he spent along the Colorado River. Since young adulthood, John loved to boat and waterski, passing on a love of the water to his children and grandchildren. John was a man that could do it all, from restoring a vintage Schiada speedboat, renovating his homes, maintaining his homes and cars by hand into eighties, and much more. For John, to do something meant to "do it right the first time." The pride in his work extended to his children, and John's greatest legacy is the integrity and fortitude with which his children lead their lives.
A donation may be made in John's honor to the Alzheimer's Association to fund research in support for other families living with the Long Goodbye of this cruel disease.
