US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced the practice of law in Lacon, Illinois. He was elected sheriff in 1850, clerk of Marshall County in 1852 and county judge in 1857. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the 11th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, promoted through the ranks and was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel of US Volunteers in 1865. After the war he was elected a member of the State Senate in 1866. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he retired from public life.
