Wiliam was a son of Arthur or Charles Arthur Patterson and Ann or Anne (Scott) Patterson. In 1762 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, he married Elizabeth Dysert (1745-1826). They had at least three children: Eleanor (1769-1827), Arthur (1770-1836), and Alexander (1775-1842). William was a second lieutenant during the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania and Long Island, New York. He became a prisoner of war in 1777 and died on or near Long Island, New York on a British ship.
