John D. Babcock, Once Langhorne Speedway Owner

John D. Babcock, 76, former owner of Langhorne Speedway in Langhorne, Pa., died Saturday in Prince Georges General Hospital after a long illness

Mr. Babcock was bom in Boston, but moved to Washington when he was 5. He worked for the Railway Express Co. for 26 years, leaving the organization in 1929, when he joined his family in real estate and development in Mount Rainier, Md.

After World War II, Mr. Babcock and his wife owned and operated the Langhorne Speedway until 1953 when he retired. During recent years, he had been a resident of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mr. Babcock's Masonic memberships included the Grand Commandery and the Knights Templar of Maryland. He was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Mr. Babcock leaves his wife, Mrs. E. Pauline Babcock, of the home address, 3607 Rhode Island avenue, Mount Rainier; two sons, Stover L. Babcock, 10800 Georgia avenue, Silver Spring and John W. Babcock, 6421 Colesville road, University Park; and four grandchildren.

Services were to be in the chapel of Fort Lincoln Cemetery at 2 p.m. today. Entombment was to be in the mausoleum.
